The Beautification of Shields Cemetery

Joan's mother and some other ancestors are buried in Shields Cemetery in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Until recently, this was a very private haven isolated from everything by a long wall of dense fir forest. Several years ago these trees were felled, exposing the nearby highway which we never realized was there. Currently a row of new houses has been built with their back yards abutting the cemetery just yards from Joan's final resting place.

We are relieved that she never knew of this development, and we would like to give her back something of the peacefulness she once knew while visiting her mother's grave. We are working with the Shields Cemetery Association, in the undertaking of a planting program to shield the development from view. We are negotiating with them to plant evergreen trees and shrubs along the fence line, and to arrange for their care until they are well established.
